Sound of Dragon Medical: A look at the Dragon Headset and Nuance PowerMics II and III
Nuance dragon medical software is highly compatible with multiple different microphones and headsets, including the Philips and Olympus brands. That said, we often recommend that customers purchase a Nuance designed recording device as they are designed specifically for and optimize the use of Dragon dictation software, including dragon medical. There are three primary recording devices that can be purchased along with your dragonmedical software, which we will be introducing here: the Dragon Headset, the Nuance PowerMic II (also called the Nuance Power Mic 2), and the Nuance PowerMic III (Nuance PowerMic 3).
The Dragon Headset is the simplest and most affordable of the dragon medical recording devices, and it is the original headset used with dragon medical software. It is a USB headset with a noise cancelling microphone that reduces background noise for better speech accuracy while the USB-enhanced digital sound ensures consistent audio quality throughout use. This is particularly important given the playback feature available in dragon medical software, which allows the user to play back their dictation in their own voice. The preciseness of the audio quality is partly due to optimization of the headset with dragon medical software, however it is also partly due to the nature of USB microphones. This is because a USB connection allows both your microphone and the speakers direct digital quality access to your computer. The Dragon Headset really does provide superior audio input for users of dragonmedical.
Aside from the audio and sound quality benefits of this highly affordable headset, the design also proves to be an asset for any user of dragon medical. The design is simple and features an adjustable single earphone design with a cushioned swivel-mounted ear piece that fits left or right-side and makes the headset extremely light and comfortable. The microphone boom is also highly adjustable, allowing for the precise positioning of the microphone and easy maneuverability for any dictation situation. It also has a foldable design, where it can be made flat for easy storage and travel, a particularly useful feature for doctors using dragonmedical at multiple locations or while on the go.
This headset comes standard with the purchase of Dragon Medical Practice Edition 2 w/headset only, or can be purchased separately where dragon medical software is sold.
Nuance PowerMic II (or PowerMic 2)
The PowerMic is the piece de resistance of the Nuance audio devices, and although it costs more than the Dragon Headset, it is well worth the additional investment, particularly for anyone regularly using dragonmedical. It is truly ideal for medical professionals who are looking for high levels of speed, ease-of-use, and productivity when using dragonmedical, and is designed for complete integration with all Dragon Medical Practice software.
The PowerMic II, more precisely, was designed specifically for physicians and other medical personnel using dragonmedical software to streamline their charting process. The goal was to give dragon medical users complete control of their computer systems by not only facilitating fast and accurate dictation but also limiting the need to switch between the microphone, keyboard, and mouse during the dictation process. The unidirectional microphone has high-level noise-cancellation which ensures higher accuracy and better sound quality, facilitating command recognition by dragonmedical but also ensuring ease of playback and editing. This is particularly good for work in noisy environments, such as hospitals, where the ambient noise and hustle and bustle of activity will not hamper the accuracy of the dragon medical software. Overall, the PowerMic 2 increases your speech-to-text efficiency without sacrificing accuracy when using dragonmedical, while also increasing overall productivity.
In addition to high quality and accurate recording, the PowerMic II also offers an additional set of features that are beneficial to users of dragon medical software and help to increase overall productivity. The USB connection allows for easy plug-and play installation thus eliminating the need to have sound card-enabled PCs, while the simple thumb-control design allows for ease of operation when dictating, editing, navigating, and reviewing documents using the integrated, fully functional PC-mouse capabilities. Essentially, the PowerMic II gives full dictation control to its user, allowing them to quickly navigate through and work with dragonmedical documents, templates, and fields using only their voice for review and editing. In addition to the track-point mouse and left and right-click capabilities, the PowerMic 2 also contains a series of programmable buttons that can be easily personalized to the dragon medical users’ needs, thus increasing speed of performance and productivity.
As a final point of pride, not only is the PowerMic II operationally exceptional, but it is also designed with the user in mind. The handheld microphone was designed to rest ergonomically in the hands of its dragon medical user to facilitate enhanced productivity and quick and easy pickup and use. It is easily portable, so can travel anywhere you do to get your dictation job done, and is much faster than putting on a headset, an asset for any busy medical professional. The microphone was also placed flush to the device and on an angle for optimum recording, while the built-in speaker allows for easy playback.
The PowerMic 2 is an essential tool for any dragon medical software user, and can be purchased either individually at an authorized dragon medical reseller, or as part of the Dragon Medical Practice Edition 2 w/PowerMic II software package.
Nuance PowerMic III (or PowerMic 3)
The new PowerMic 3 was designed with the intent of improving upon the PowerMic 2 by making the user experience more streamlined and modern. Many of the core features remain the same, such as the unidirectional noise-cancelling microphone and the full-function PC-mouse capable thumb-control that allows the user to easily navigate through fields and documents without switching between the microphone, keyboard, and mouse, however they have been updated to better serve the healthcare professionals using dragon medical software. At its core, the PowerMic III remains the same effective tool we all came to know and love, but with new and improved features that advance dragon medical dictation to a new level.
Improvements were made to the microphone to facilitate the easier and faster control of dictation and document navigation in the dragon medical software, while the new and simplified PC compatible thumb-control operation uses an optical control pad (also known as a touch pad) which gives the user more precise control and eliminates any moving parts, thus increasing microbial protection, a key feature when being used in medical environments. It also comes with a holster for the microphone when not in use, a shorter body design, and the option of a short chord that is well suited for laptops and windows-based tablets, a common tool with dragonmedical. Combined, the redesigned ergonomic handheld structure and the new optical control pad allow for new levels of dictation speed, ease-of-use, and productivity.
Furthermore, the PowerMic 3 is the perfect partner for PowerMic Mobile, a new program developed for use with dragonmedical that can turn your smartphone into a secure wireless microphone. This is an added feature that will benefit any on-the-go clinician who still wants to take full advantage of their dragon medical software.
To best suit the needs of our customers, the PowerMic 3 will be offered in parallel with the PowerMic 2, to recognize that some users may prefer the longer body of the PowerMic 2, while others prefer the smaller sleeker design of the PowerMic 3. As such, like with the PowerMic 2, the PowerMic 3 can be purchased either individually or as part of the Dragon Medical Practice Edition 2 w/PowerMic III software package.
